The UK’s top coarse angling magazine, catering for the widest spectrum of coarse angling methods and techniques, chose to use my illustrations back in 1998 to enhance the content of their publication. I still continue to illustrate for Improve today.
Fresh design in August 2005 has enhanced the magazine supported by a full image style redesign. This covers not just clear descriptive ‘how to’ layouts, but also detailed sequential diagrams to get a clear instruction across to both the novice and experienced angler alike, in a positive and respectful way. Many of the illustrations provided today are full DPS (double page spread) layouts that are used as a ‘background’ to the article/feature over which info graphics are laid out, bringing more character to the spread than a set of isolated images and text.

Project Feature - Knot Illustrations
A key element of providing readers with details about how to fish effectively – good clear info graphics showing how to tie the most useful knots – an example of one such illustration shown here.
Many of the most popular knots used by modern coarse anglers have now been illustrated and are available to be used from the stock images library.
Project Feature - Realism
Every effort is made to make the presentation in the rig illustrations look as ‘real’ as possible and to have some ‘atmosphere’. Be it the species or the way some baits cloud the water around the rig with attraction, hopefully these illustrations create that feeling.
Every contributor has their way of fishing for particular species, they each have ‘favourite’ effective rigs for each, these are illustrated as part of the feature to be presented in the magazine each month. These may be a full DPS over two pages, used half page or at the designers discretion, all of these rig type illustrations start life at DPS scale.
Project Feature - Great Detail
To make the rig illustration more useful to the reader, the detail in each rig is kept as clear as possible so that components used are visible and the reader can hopefully replicate the set up in their own rigs. These illustrations are annotated when placed in the feature to describe the components used and other relevant detail that may appear in the feature copy.
