This is one of my favourite methods, it’s ‘modern’ feeder fishing, not the old style ground bait feeder that involves filling a tube type feeder with ground bait, which may work for you if you prefer, Not just a carp method, but will produce tench, bream and roach if they are there to be caught.

This one that has been developed to get bait and hook baits into tight, difficult positions close to overhanging bushes etc on islands and far banks, and optimise the hooking potential too.

There are couple of variations of this approach and you will find them all covered eventually here in this section. The feeder here is designed to be loaded with softened 3mm expander pellets, there are ready softened versions available from some suppliers, and you will find detailed guides to ‘softening’ pellets online in Youtube videos.

The rig is often fished ‘semi fixed’ with the hook link swivel pushed into a soft socket in the feeder to provide a bolt effect that will encourage the fish to prick its lip when picking up your hookbait. This is usually a 6mm to 8mm hard pellet or 8mm wafter, but luncheon meat, corn, maggots or worm can be used, fished on a short hooklink (4 to 6 inches max) on a short hair.

The idea is that the soft pellets on the feeder slowly break down and expand out and your hook bait is right there amongst them and any fish feeding on them will eventually pick up your hook bait, in doing so it pricks itself and the weight of the feeder semi hooks up on the lip.

To fish this method requires a feeder rod of 9 to 11ft in length with a medium strength tip..from 3/4 oz to perhaps 2 ozs dependant on distance to cast, type and size of fish you encounter.

The feeder is often fished close to the margins of any islands present, in open water or into the far margins of the lake, if these are within casting distance. Its also possible to fish these close in under your own bank on many waters to hook margin feeders mopping up spilled or dropped bait.

Rigs set up

OK setting up…this rig uses a Guru Hybrid in-line pellet feeder, loaded with softened 3 or 4mm expander pellets, or optionally ready softened and flavoured micro pellets available from a supplier like Spotted Fin. It is to be fished on a quiver tip rod to get the best bite indication.

  1. Reel line of minimum 7lb BS..use 9 or 10lb BS for larger carp
  2. Tail rubber on the stem
  3. Interchangable stem running through the feeder (available in short, long and elasticated versions)
  4. The Guru method feeder which comes in a variety of sizes (smal, meduim or large)
  5. Guru quick link sleeve
  6. Guru quick link swivel to attach the hooklink to
  7. 4 inch hooklink (Guru MSW
  8. 6 or 8mm hard pellet or 8mm wafter hook bait in pellet band
  9. Softened expander pellets or ready to use soft pellets.
Baits

Classic baits for method feeder fishing are soften feed or expander pellets, a single size or a mix of various sizes in the feeder, with varied size pellets, wafters, small boilies, sweetcorn luncheon meat, maggots on the hook, placed in the feeder when loading…try changing the mix of feed to hook baits to ring the changes……

Softened exander pellets are the bait of choice for this method, optionally you can use Spotted Fin Catalyst Method Ready Pellets, see the video for some guidance on softening expander pellets.
